'The Awakening' by 'Joseph M. Martin'

We were singing this song when I was a member of METU chorus between 2000-2003. Here are the lyrics. I strongly recommend you to find the music file and listen if you like chorus music with only piano playing in the background.

"I dreamed a dream, a silent dream of a land not far away where no bird sang, no steeples rang, and teardrops fell like rain. I dreamed a dream; a silent dream. I dreamed a dream of a land so filled with pride that every song, both weak and strong, withered and died. I dreamed a dream No hallelujah; not one hosanna! No song of love, no lullaby. And no choir sang to change the world. No pipers played, no dancers twirled. I dreamed a dream; a silent dream. Awake, awake! Soli deo gloria! Awake, Awake! Awake my soul and sing, the time for praise has come. The silence of the night has passed, a new day has begun! Let music never die in me; forever let my spirit sing! Wherever emptiness is found let there be joy and glorious sound. Let music never die in me; forever let my spirit sing! Let all our voices join as one to praise the giver of the sun! Awake, awake! Let music live!

I sang this song in the Kentucky Men's Chorus for All-State '01. I always forget the name of this song, but it is still my favorite choral piece, even after 5 years of A Cappella choir at Abilene Christian University in Texas.

As the Artistic Director of The Gay Men's Chorus of Manhattan, this work has become a staple of the GLBT choral cannon. Joseph Martin is a genius. If you like this, you need to order his "Songs of Wisdom from Old Turtle". It is truly amazing.

I sang this song when I was a freshman with the Lee High School Mens Choir in Midland, Tx for UIL contest. This song literally changed my views on music. I fell in love with singing when I sang this song. Every year I beg my college choir director to let us sing this, but until now I couldn't find the composer. Now I can't wait to show him!

I sang this song yesterday with District Honor Choir Springfield, MO, and the conductor was Joseph M Martin himself! He was awesome...

Choir with full orchestra. I sang this back in 1999 with a SATB choir for a competition. We made all the poor Californian kids jaws drop. We ended up with a 96 out of 100 for the competition. Next highest score was 89.

I sang this song my senior year at Williamson High School in New York. I LOVED IT! Our instructor had us preview it before we got to learn it. I was so moved by it. Hairs were sticking up all over my body. I could not wait to perform it. To this day, it is by far my most favorite song that i have performed in all my choir days. Joseph M. Martin is magnificent!!!!

Like many who have had the privilege to sing this piece, it has changed their perspective on music and performance. I performed this many years ago in a TTBB arrangement and have found the message and sound to be more powerful than an SATB arrangement. I think it's the "Let all our voices join as one . . . " that gives the TTBB arrangement more justice (instead of the octave difference in the SATB arrangement).

Thanks for the post.

Gosh I sang this song three years ago for our mens choir... I daresay that it has been my favorite song that we've sang all of my 4 years here

The twisted part of this is that I'm at METU right now, and was looking for the name of this song to recommend to Hazer Tek that we sing it this semester. How strange!!!

My highschool chior sang a year ago this for FAACS competition and we got 3rd place! I was soprano and my favorite part is the "Soli deo gloria" part. It was so pretty and my favorite song of all time!

I heard this song performed by one of my school's other Choirs at Contest; it has haunted me since. 5 years I've been searching for this song, without being able to remember the words. Today I remembered the beginning, and thank you so much for having the lyrics up so I could identify it! I'm so happy to have this song back in my life; it really represents how much a part of me music is!

Just as everyone else, I sang this with my H.S. choir (12 years ago). It was amazing; as the class and the accompaniment ended, we all continued to the end of the song while walking to our next class. It was great hearing it through the hallways. Music has always been my heart and soul, so the entire "let music never die in me; forever let my spirit sing" is what has gotten me through rough times. Those who don't feel music will never fully understand its power as we do. Personally, I may never get the chance to perform again, but no matter what this song will always be written on my soul. (I just wish I could afford the sheet music. ;) )

My High School choir is singing this this year. I have a short list of songs that have been powerful enough to almost move me to tears, and this is quickly approaching the top of the list.
